Spire Systems Keeps CPUs Cool

Spire, City of Industry, Calif., offers cooling products for Intel-based and AMD-based platforms.

More often than not, a computer overheats because its cooling system is inefficient. By using Spire&'s thermal technology, system builders can curb failures.

The first thermal product that CRN Test Center engineers installed was the CoolWave III, model number SP503B0-1. The device is intended for use with Intel LGA775 Prescott processors. CoolWave III is equipped with a dual-finned copper core heat sink with a 92-millimeter fan. The low-noise fan provides enhanced airflow, ensuring maximum heat dissipation.

The CoolWave III should be used primarily for new system construction because in order to install the fan, the motherboard needs to be turned upside down to install the supported bracket. The product is priced at $9.95 within the distribution channel and carries a $21.99 suggested retail price.

The engineers also tested the KestrelKing V, model number SP792B12-U. The KestrelKing V can be used with Advanced Micro Devices&' K8, Athlon 64 4000+, Athlon 64 FX-51, Athlon 64 FX-53, Opteron 850 and Sempron 3100+.

KestelKing also has a copper base but adds temperature-control features and an auto-restart function. One gripe: When the fan speeds up or slows down based on core temperature, the noise level is noticeable.

Pricing for KestrelKing V is $7.95 through distribution; it carries a suggested retail price of $16.99.

Spire has approvals from the International Standard Commission for Quality Assurance against ISO-9002 and ISO-9001, and both products are approved by CE, UR, CSA and TUV.
