The FWAG114 is a tri-mode wireless 802.11a/b/g access point, 10/100-Mbps switch and VPN firewall in one small package. Housed in a rugged metal enclosure, the unit measures just 1.2 inches x 7.5 inches x 5.1 inches, weighs less than two pounds, and is barely noticeable once in place. Two antennas extend from the back to provide powerful signal reception.
The FWAG114 offers business-class 802.11a connectivity and is backward-compatible with 802.11b, delivering 54 Mbps 802.11g compliance. It can provide up to 108 Mbps wireless throughput running 802.11a in turbo mode using a compatible a-turbo receiver, such Netgear's WAG511 Dual Band PC Card. The FWAG114 ProSafe Dual Band Wireless VPN Firewall retails for $269.99 and has a street price of about $250. The WAG511 PC Card costs about $80.
In addition to wireless connectivity, the FWAG114 features four auto-sensing 10/100-Mbps switched LAN ports for connecting hard-wired computers or additional routers or switches. A LAN port feature called Auto Uplink eliminates the need for crossover cables and includes a 168-bit IPSec-based VPN that provides two 3DES-encrypted tunnels for secure WAN connections. The unit supports up to 253 total users, with a maximum of 96 users on a wireless LAN. The built-in firewall provides denial-of-service protection and intrusion detection using stateful packet inspection, URL access and content filtering, logging, reporting and realtime alerts. Web-page URL keyword filtering and blocking is included.
To use the FWAG114 ProSafe Dual Band Wireless VPN Firewall, a broadband modem with Internet connectivity is necessary. Each hard-wired PC needs a network card, and each remote PC needs an 802.11a, b or g wireless network card. A broadband modem connects to the Internet port on the FWAG114, and hard-wired PCs or other routers connect to any of its four local ports. The unit automatically detects ISP connections of any type, so it works instantly when turned on. The unit can be managed remotely using a Web browser.
Netgear's PowerShift channel program offers two partner levels. Platinum partners receive a 5 percent rebate for meeting $300,000 in annual sales, while PowerShift partners receive a 2 percent rebate for annual sales of $60,000. All levels receive a 5 percent discount on sales to government and educational institutions. Profit margins average 18 percent to 20 percent. Netgear also supplies seed units and not-for-resale discounts of 50 percent to help PowerShift partners with product demonstrations. Netgear provides partners with online return merchandise authorization and advanced product replacement. PowerShift partners have access to a dedicated 24x7 support line.
All partner levels receive significant support from Netgear, including access to the company's VAR sales and technical support team. A VAR team systems engineer is available for presales configurations, joint end-user calls and technical training to engineers. PowerShift-level partners are continually contacted by a Netgear inside salesperson, and channel account managers focus on the Platinum-level partners. Netgear channel personnel also make joint end-user calls, set up support seminars and arrange one-on-one training programs.
