Samsung Updates DVD-RW Drive

But Samsung Semiconductor' new Writemaster TS-H552U multiformat, dual-layer-capable DVD, priced at $75, offers cutting-edge features that promise a long life cycle. The drive can record on any available blank media, including the latest dual-layer discs.

The TS-H552U is perfect for archiving large amounts of data, such as video or multimedia files. Dual-layer discs can store up to 8.5 Gbytes on a single disc; double what a single-layer disc can hold and 12 times more than a CD-ROM. The drive is ideal for white-box and custom-system builders because of its low cost and universal compatibility with any type of blank media.

Systems built with the TS-H552U DVD drive will allow users almost unlimited functionality, incredibly fast speed and a long life cycle.

The TS-H552U is Samsung's second-generation dual-layer DVD recorder. Both are 16X units, but the new drive is capable of burning dual-layer discs at 5X, while the older unit could burn dual-layer discs at only 2.4X. This new version of the drive is almost twice as fast at recording dual-layer discs as the first-generation unit.

The TS-H552U can read CD-ROM and CD-R media at 48X and can record on CD-R at 40X. It can read or write to CD-RW media at 32X, DVD-ROM at 16X and all other types of DVD media at 8X. It can record on DVD-RW or DVD+RW at 4X. It writes to DVD+R and DVD-R media at 16X, but dual-layer DVD+R media can be written to at 5X, the fastest writing speed available for dual-layer media at this time.

The internal ATAPI drive is easy to install. All necessary cables and hardware are included, along with a software bundle that includes Nero DVD burning software.
