Eurocom&s All-In-One Desktop Saves Space, Conserves Power

Not easy to steal, all-in-one PCs can&t be hid under a coat or slipped into a briefcase like notebooks can. Moreover, all-in-one PCs haven&t reached commodity status and therefore still offer the reseller handsome profits. Eurocom is seeking to capitalize with a beautiful all-in-one PC that looks futuristic enough to be used as a prop in a science fiction movie yet is practical enough for everyday use.

The Eurocom L570J combines a 64-bit mobile Athlon 64 processor with a 17-inch widescreen flat-panel display and built-in speakers, all packed into a single unit with a very small footprint. The system comes with a touch-screen option. If power savings potential is more important than processing speed, the unit can be had with a 25-watt AMD Sempron processor, as opposed to an Athlon processor, which consumes 62 watts.

That&s important, because this all-in-one system can save big companies lots of money in electricity costs. The L570J consumes approximately 160 watts compared with the 500 to 600 watts traditional desktop PCs use. The result is a savings of about $100 a year per user, so a company with 1,000 PCs in service could save $100,000 per year in energy expenses if everyone were to use an L570J.

The system is suited for corporate use, or in schools or crowded environments such as stock trading floors. The glossy 17-inch WSXGA+ display has a native resolution of 1,680 x 1,050 pixels that is powered by an integrated VIA K8N800 chip with up to 64 Mbytes of shared memory.

The sample unit considered by the CRN Test Center came loaded with a top-of-the-line 8x Dual-Layer DVD Burner, though less expensive drives are also available.

The L570J is available with hard drives up to 300 Gbytes in size and up to 2 Gbytes of DDR400 memory. It also includes Gigabit Ethernet as well as 802.11b/g wireless and Bluetooth, if desired. A Web camera centered above the display is also available. The built-in multispeaker system includes a subwoofer. Ports include six USB 2.0 options, one FireWire connector, audio inputs and outputs, a media card reader, PC Card slot, S-Video, VGA and DVI. A TV tuner with a remote control is optional.

The unit has a carry handle on top so it&s easy to bring it from room to room, which is handy when setting up temporary training centers. A full-size keyboard with a touchpad completes the package, and the keyboard folds up flat against the display for storage or travel. A carry bag is included.

The Eurocom L570J can be had for as little as $1,520, but the more loaded demo unit was priced at $2,238.
