Security Minute: 4 Top IoT Critical Success Factors

More than half of partners have sold IoT, because it’s in demand and profitable, but there are a few critical success factors you need to know about to stay on top.

More than half of partners have sold IoT, because it’s in demand and profitable, according to IPED Consulting Channelytics research on “The State of IoT.”

But, if you want to get in front of the line, there are a few critical success factors you need to know about:

  •  Building relationships with key IoT business decision makers.
  • Getting custom app development skills on your team.
  • Hiring vertical market business process consultants.
  • Prioritizing advanced edge security skills, which we are going to talk more about in this article.
  • “There are now real-world use cases out there that the business world is seeing that, if they can harness the power of this technology and they can do that securely, there’s real impactful, meaningful change to their business,” says Jason Wright, national enterprise account manager at MSP All Covered.

Wright says that change could be in the form of revenue growth, profitability or customer retention, but the catch is keeping all these devices—like body cams on police, paralegal bots and point-of-sale (POS) systems—secure.

“There’s going to be 40 billion IoT devices in networks around the world by 2020, so we’re talking about a massive amount of devices that have no security embedded into them, creating an enormous amount of data,” says Stephan Tallent, senior director MSSP, Fortinet.

Point products and platform solutions fail when it comes to IoT. That’s why Wright uses an integrated technology – Fortinet Security Fabric. He can view all device traffic through a single console. “The whole premise around their UTM platform was this idea that you could buy a fully scalable architected solution, but really only license or enable the features on that device you need, which became very attractive to partners like us,” he says.

Gartner has recognized Fortinet as a leader in its Magic Quadrant for Unified Threat Management (SMB Multifunction Firewalls) for the ninth time.
