5 Predictions For Software Development In 2022

Rick Whiting

A Forrester Research report says to expect more use of AI bots, collaborative work management and event-drive architectures in software development operations in the new year.

Half of enterprise development teams will shift to consolidated DevOps toolchains and pipelines

Forrester says that many organizations have already shifted to consolidated test frameworks and the market research firm is predicting that the same will happen with DevOps tools in 2022.

That will enable automated governance and compliance, further the adoption of GitOps, and utilize value stream management tools, according to Forrester. (GitOps is an operational framework that applies DevOps best practices in application development, such as version control, collaboration, compliance and CI/CD, and applies them to IT infrastructure automation, according to a definition from GitLab.)

The new DevOps systems will be largely hosted, essentially becoming platform-as-a-service, Forrester says. That will enable teams to automate development cycles, from build to infrastructure deployment, without necessarily deploying infrastructure itself.
