Microsoft retained the top spot in database and application development software sales through distributors and retailers in the U.S. in the fourth quarter, recording nearly 12 percent sales growth.

That's according to The NPD Group of Port Washington, N.Y. The NPD Group tracks monthly technology sales information from the largest IT distributors and resellers in North America.

Rounding out the top three for database and application development software sales are IBM and Oracle, according to the market research firm. The total for the database and application development software space in Q4 was $796.2 million, up 10.1 percent from $723.0 million in the same quarter one year earlier.

5. Tableau Software

Tableau's database and application development software sales were $11.1 million in the October to December quarter, up 0.6 percent from $11.0 million in the fourth quarter one year earlier. The company's share of the market in Q4 was 1.4 percent, down from 1.5 percent one year ago.

4. Red Hat

Red Hat's database and application development software sales were $26.0 million in the October to December quarter, up 16.2 percent from $22.4 million in the fourth quarter one year earlier. The company's share of the market in Q4 was 3.3 percent, up from 3.1 percent one year ago.

3. Oracle

Oracle's database and application development software sales were $46.8 million in the October to December quarter, down 13.5 percent from $54.1 million in the fourth quarter one year earlier. The company's share of the market in Q4 was 5.9 percent, down from 7.5 percent one year ago.

2. IBM

IBM's database and application development software sales were $220.5 million in the October to December quarter, up 3.9 percent from $212.4 million in the fourth quarter one year earlier. The company's share of the market in Q4 was 27.7 percent, down from 29.4 percent one year ago.

Microsoft's database and application development software sales were $249.3 million in the October to December quarter, up 11.9 percent from $222.8 million in the fourth quarter one year earlier. The company's share of the market in Q4 was 31.3 percent, up from 30.8 percent one year ago.
