20 Hot Products From 2009 Channel Best-Sellers

Everything Channel has compiled the list of best-selling products through distributors for 2008, according to The NPD Group. NPD aggregated SKU-level purchases from January 2008 to December 2008 and the following slides illustrate the best-selling products in about 20 different categories. All the products were sold through distributors to customers, ranging from retailers to VARs to direct marketers.

Apple finished a distant third in overall desktop sales behind Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo, but this Apple Mac Pro, which included a 2.8GHz Intel Xeon quad-core processor, 320-GB hard drive and a DVD+/-RW drive, was the top-selling desktop through distributors last year.

Panasonic's CF19FHGAXAM model was the top-selling notebook through distributors in 2008. The configuration included an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.06GHz processor and a 10.4-inch screen.

HP finished behind IBM in terms of total dollars sold in blade servers in 2008, but this ProLiant server was the top-selling blade last year. The BL460c includes a Xeon quad-core 3.0GHz processor.

This 19-inch HP monitor, with 1,280-x-1,024 resolution and.29-pixel pitch, was the top-selling monitor sold through distributors in 2008, according to NPD.

This 40-inch monitor, which includes a 1,366-x-768 display, black frame and .64-pixel pitch, beat out a 32-inch NEC model as the top-selling large LCD display (30 inches or larger) last year, according to NPD.

The Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 was the best-selling scanner in 2008, according to NPD. It features 18 ppm and 600-x-600 dpi.

This Lexmark printer was the only non-HP product in the top five best-selling MFPs for 2008, but it was No. 1, according to NPD. Its features include 50 ppm, 1,200-x-1,200 dpi, and print/copy/scan/fax capability.

HP dominated the color laser market in 2008, and this model was the best-selling of all. It can print 31 ppm, features 600 dpi and 288 MB of memory.

This Epson model was the top-selling projector in 2008. It features 2,200 lumens, 1,024-x-768 resolution, and a 10W speaker and integrated Closed Captioning decoder.

American Power Conversion dominated the UPS market in terms of dollars sold through distribution, according to NPD, and the APC Smart UPS 1500VA was the best-selling product.



Its specifications include 980 watts, 1,500 VA, Input 230V, Output 230V, Interface Port DB-9 RS-232, SmartSlot and USB, according to the company.

Cisco Systems' ASA 5520 VPN Appliance bundle combines security and VPN services and was the top-selling network security hardware device in 2008, according to NPD. The ASA 5520 includes 750 VPN Peers and four Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.

Check Point Software Technologies' VPN-1 Power gateway includes the vendor's FireWall-1 security with integrated firewall, VPN and intrusion prevention, according to the company.

Trend Micro accounted for more than 50 percent of the dollar volume spent on e-mail security software through distribution last year, with the company's ScanMail for Exchange representing the best-selling product for 2008, according to NPD.

Symantec is the big name in security suite software sales through distribution and the company's Multi-tier Protection 11.0 Express was the top-selling product in 2008, according to NPD. It includes Symantec Endpoint Protection, Symantec Mail Security and Symantec Brightmail Gateway products.

Cisco's 2811 Integrated Services Router was the top-selling SMB router (less than $1,500) through distribution last year, according to NPD. It allows for concurrent services, such as security and voice, and advanced services to multiple T1/E1/xDSL WAN rates, according to the company.

This router, the best-selling wireless router through distributors last year, features 802.11g wireless technology, RJ-45 pinouts and four ports. Two similar Linksys routers, the WRT54G2 (second) and WRT54GL (fourth), were also high-selling products in the category, according to NPD.

Western Digital's WDH1U5000N model features a 7,200-RPM drive, USB connectivity and a 3.5-inch form factor. It was the best-selling external hard drive through distribution last year, according to NPD.

The best-selling true NAS product for 2008, according to NPD's research is the NetApp FAS3020 Filer, which has a maximum raw capacity of 84 TB and a maximum number of 168 disk drives.

While Microsoft accounted for more than 50 percent of total revenue in this category last year, through distributors, this Oracle Database Enterprise Edition product was the top-selling SKU, according to NPD.

As in the Relational Databases category, the company with the most overall market share didn't have the single best-selling product. In this case, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition Pass Adv License was the best-selling SKU, despite Veritas Backup Exec 12.0 having more overall share and more SKUs available.
