Unisys, CSC, HP, ePlus, Ciber Heat Up Last Week
VAR500 firms are continuing to develop technologies that are innovative and respond to customer's needs. For example, HP in India is rolling out a cloud-based mobile solution, Unisys is showing clients how to optimize Windows 7 and CSC is inking a lucrative deal with a bank that will help improve its networks and communication services. In addition, two companies named two new executives, one a CEO and another a vice president of national professional services.
ePlus Names VP, National Professional Services
ePlus Technology (2010 VAR500 rank 86) appointed Dan Farrell vice president of National Professional Services.
Farrell has more than 20 years of experience in the professional services area and was previously responsible for managing the service organizations in several enterprises, from service delivery and operations to enhancing and optimizing the customer experience. Farrell has held a variety of service management roles throughout his career, including executive vice president of services and partner at a New York regional VAR, senior vice president of services at Dimension Data, vice president of services at Integrated Systems Group and manager at Siemens Enterprise Communications.
HP Intros Cloud-Based Tech For Mobile Users
HP Services' (2010 VAR500 rank 2) Indian-based headquarters debuted a cloud-based technology called SiteonMobile. The technology will simplify the accessibility of content and various transactions on the Web by breaking Web services down into a series of tasks. Then, SiteonMobile navigates users across the Web through a number of steps to achieve a particular goal such as retrieving information from the Web or completing an online transaction. The steps are based on a cloud-based application. Reportedly, India has more than 600 million mobile users who are using mobile connections.
Unisys Shows Customers The Windows 7 Light
Unisys (2010 VAR500 rank 29) announced new planning and migration services to help clients transform their desktop environments to capitalize on Windows 7 features. The services enable clients to assess, prepare and deploy Windows 7 in desktop environments. They include:
- A half-day workshop designed to help clients assess their current desktop environment and see how migration to Windows 7 can enhance their employees’ productivity.
- Services to facilitate a range of first steps prior to full-scale deployment -- from application compatibility testing to proof-of-concept pilots and production trials.
- Managed services to streamline large-scale deployments of Windows 7 across the entire enterprise.

CSC Signs $580 Million UBS Deal
Computer Sciences Corp. (2010 VAR500 rank 6) reportedly has signed a five-year contract worth up to $580 million with Swiss bank UBS. CSC will provide network, security and telecommunication services.
Further terms were not disclosed.
Ciber Gets A New CEO
Ciber (2010 VAR500 rank 64) appointed Dave Peterschmidt as CEO and member of the board of directors.
Peterschmidt previously was head of Openwave Systems and spent seven years as chairman and CEO of Inktomi. He also worked at Sybase for six years starting in 1991 and was its COO for two years. During his tenure, the firm acquired Powersoft in 1995.
Peterschmidt started his career at Electronic Data Systems, now a part of HP. He serves on the boards of Savvis and Limelight Networks.
In a statement, Peterschmidt said his initial focus will be to streamline operations across the company and bolster innovation in emerging areas "to best position us to deliver on the global opportunity ahead."
