10. Broadcom To Buy CA In $18.9 Billion Deal

On July 11 chipmaker Broadcom announced that it had struck a deal to buy software vendor CA Technologies for a whopping $18.9 billion.

Broadcom, who's $121-billion bid to acquire Qualcomm was thwarted in March by the Trump Administration, said the acquisition of CA would create "one of the world's leading infrastructure technology companies."

But the deal, expected to close by the end of this year, left many industry observers scratching their heads. Broadcom, a semiconductor manufacturer based in San Jose, would seem to have little synergy with CA, a New York-based developer of IT management, DevOps and security software.

The deal comes on the heels of Broadcom's $5.9 billion acquisition of Brocade Communications in November 2017.
