Gartner: Global IT Spending On Software And Services -- Including Cloud -- On The Rise

The future of IT spending will be characterized by a combination of decreased spending on hardware devices and an increase in spending on software and services, including on the cloud, says Gartner’s John Lovelock.

Enterprise Software: The New Driver Of Global IT Spending

IT spending is moving from hardware to software globally, with consulting and implementation spending relatively soft, Lovelock said.

"But cloud software is seeing fantastic growth," he said. "SaaS, PaaS and IaaS are showing the strongest growth."

And, despite the push to the cloud, Gartner is seeing software licensing still growing over time, Lovelock said.

"Software licensing is still attracting new customers," he said. "It's true the cloud guys overtook the licensing guys. But licensing has not been cannibalized by the cloud. We're seeing growth in big contracts."
