Businesses sometimes find themselves in the news for the wrong reasons. Here are 10 companies that made headlines this year – but not in a good way.

9. Salesforce's Dreamforce megaconference was anything but a dream this year when several dozen activists staged a highly visible protest at the San Francisco event in September in an effort to shame Salesforce into ending its contract to provide software to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection federal agency.

The protesters marched with a 14-foot tall, 800-pound wheeled cage (with a sign that said: "Detention center, powered by Salesforce") that was meant to evoke immigration detention facilities in the U.S. where children were separated from their parents in a controversial Trump Administration policy earlier this year.

Salesforce announced the contract with the border agency in March under which the company provides customer service, recruiting and analytics applications. In June some 600 Salesforce employees signed a petition urging the company to end the contract.

Salesforce said its contract does not violate the company's terms of service. The company emphasized that it didn't work with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and that none of its work was connected to projects that involved family separation.
