Cloud computing largely is seen as a cost-reducing move by chief technology officers polled by Morgan Stanley, who cited it as the second most defensible information technology expenditure should the economy worsen significantly this year.

Managed services and enterprise software providers and a cloud-native storage company were among the companies working in the cloud space that secured investments ranging from $1.5 million to $160 million in the last month to help spur their growth.

San Diego-based Kyriba, a cloud treasury solutions provider of cash management technology, scored the biggest deal with a $160 million investment round that essentially was a buyout that’ll give private equity group Bridgepoint a majority ownership stake.

Cloud computing largely is seen as a cost-reducing move by chief technology officers polled by Morgan Stanley, who cited it as the second most defensible information technology expenditure -- after security software – should the economy worsen significantly this year.

The Morgan Stanley survey results, released yesterday, “show how CIOs are willing to continue to invest in cloud computing projects in economic downturns, as they see the initiative as essential to the long-term competitiveness and viability of business,” analyst Brian Nowak said in his report.

Other cloud-related companies recently attracting financing included Faction, Pixeom, OpsCompass, Saama Technologies, Skymind, Portworx, SoftNAS, UKCloud and Ovation.io.
