Battle For Supercomputing Supremacy

AWS devoted a prime keynote slot at its re:Invent 2019 conference to highlight how it's finally ready to offer true supercomputing capabilities in the cloud. Google, Microsoft and Alibaba are also promoting their on-demand infrastructure to High Performance Computing practitioners.

Despite all the ways public cloud can ease the pains of scientists and engineers running HPC workloads, that market has largely stayed on-premises. HPC users have only recently begun routinely bursting into the public cloud to ease bottlenecks in accessing resources.

But advances in local networking, multi-core architectures and specialized chips might prove hard to resist for customers designing semiconductors, modeling the weather, exploring for oil and gas, and doing advanced genomic sequencing.

In 2020, HPC will become a major battlefront among the hyper-scalers as those resource-demanding workloads begin to migrate to cloud en masse.
