Cloudy Days
Worldwide spending on cloud services continued to surge as 2020 came to a close, with Microsoft showing notable growth in market share. The industry saw $37.1 billion in enterprise spending on cloud infrastructure services during the fourth quarter, a 35-percent increase over the same period a year prior, according to a report from Synergy Research Group, based in Reno, Nev. Full-year revenue from cloud infrastructure services — which include infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and hosted private cloud services — was $129 billion. That represented growth of 34 percent from 2019, when Synergy tallied $96 billion in global cloud infrastructure services revenue. Public IaaS and PaaS services represented the bulk of services ordered by enterprises in 2020.
