International Presence Growth
“Looking at our networking and data center investments alone, we have the largest network with the lowest latency of any cloud provider,” Pichai said. “With our expansions into Warsaw, Delhi, Melbourne, and Toronto this year, we now have 28 regions with plans for 10 more. And it‘s all connected by 19 subsea cables. Our Grace Hopper transatlantic cable will be the first to incorporate novel optical fiber switching.
Google announced the new Toronto region in September. The new region, which has three availability zones, is the second in Canada for the Mountain View, Calif.-based cloud computing provider, which previously opened a cloud region in Montreal in 2018.
Amazon Web Services has one cloud region in Canada that launched in 2016 in the metropolitan Montreal area and added a third availability zone last year. Microsoft Azure has a three-zone cloud region in Toronto and another region in Quebec City, both of which also opened in 2016.
Among Google’s subsea cables, Dunant connects the U.S. and mainland Europe, running between Virginia Beach, Va., and Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, France. It was ready for service in February. Equiano will connect Africa with Europe, and Grace Hopper, will link the U.S., U.K. and Spain. Google is expected to complete Grace Hopper -- named for American computer scientist Grace Brewster Murray Hopper -- next year.
