A Hectic Year Caps A Transformative Decade 

The year just ending was an appropriate bookend to a decade that brought in a sea change in how enterprise applications are built, deployed, hosted, managed, versioned and secured. 

The IT industry ushered in 2010 with essentially two large Infrastructure-as-a-Service providers. AWS had already done a lot to prove the viability of public cloud, and, at the time, Rackspace was doing some pioneering work as well offering its customers hosted virtual servers. Microsoft and Google were only gearing up as the decade kicked off to enter the new "utility computing" sector—one that it's easy to forget still had ardent, vocal skeptics. 

Fast forward 10 years and cloud is the norm. And the plethora of new technologies and development and operating models it has enabled continue rapidly transforming the world as we know it.
