Waugerman is an engineer by trade, earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Kentucky, Lexmark’s home state. After a brief stint with IBM in 1989 working on manufacturing and printer projects, he joined Lexmark in 1991.

For 14 years he worked in product engineering, according to his LinkedIn profile. One Lexmark partner said the new CEO has deep technical knowledge of the devices. While most major vendors are in wars of attrition over prices, fighting for who will take the least to win a deal, Waugerman is in a position to help deliver better services and products, the partner said.

Waugerman also spent five years as vice president and general manager of global supplies sales and marketing. In that role, he was responsible for the marketing and sales of aftermarket supplies and services offerings, the company said.
