VMWARE VSAN 6.2

WINNER: OVERALL

Version 6.2 of VMware's software-defined storage-area network product, VSAN, has introduced a number of features for improved data protection and efficiency. Erasure coding and compression are among the strong points of VSAN 6.2, said Mike Feld, CEO of Holyoke, Mass.-based VertitechIT. Those features "make it far more efficient so you need fewer drives for greater storage capacity -- lower cost per TB," Feld said. VSAN 6.2 also includes better support for stretched cluster design, he said, which allows disaster recovery and high-availability capabilities to "span more data centers more easily. Stretching clusters eliminates the need for separate replication technology."
