Commvault says its new HyperScale appliance and software solutions are primed for the channel and positioned to take on upstart rival Rubrik in the secondary storage and back-up market.

HyperScale is an on-premise system sold on a subscription basis, and is available as an all-in-one hardware and software solution, or in a software-only reference architecture version that customers can configure on hardware of their choice, according to Commvault.

With an eye toward hybrid environments, the HyperScale software adds scale-out infrastructure to the Commvault Data Platform, and the company says it integrates seamlessly with existing storage arrays, hypervisors, applications and "the full range of cloud provider solutions." The system includes a built-in operating environment, virtualization and Red Hat storage.

The Tinton Falls, N.J.-based company said HyperScale gives customers flexible consumption options while "helping customers replace costly legacy hardware, avoid vendor lock-in, and gain modern agility, flexibility and cloud economics that were previously unavailable."
