5 Key Points For Partners In Commvault's New HyperScale Appliance

Hyper-Active

Commvault says its new HyperScale appliance and software solutions are primed for the channel and positioned to take on upstart rival Rubrik in the secondary storage and back-up market.

HyperScale is an on-premise system sold on a subscription basis, and is available as an all-in-one hardware and software solution, or in a software-only reference architecture version that customers can configure on hardware of their choice, according to Commvault.

With an eye toward hybrid environments, the HyperScale software adds scale-out infrastructure to the Commvault Data Platform, and the company says it integrates seamlessly with existing storage arrays, hypervisors, applications and "the full range of cloud provider solutions." The system includes a built-in operating environment, virtualization and Red Hat storage.

The Tinton Falls, N.J.-based company said HyperScale gives customers flexible consumption options while "helping customers replace costly legacy hardware, avoid vendor lock-in, and gain modern agility, flexibility and cloud economics that were previously unavailable."

Making It Easy For Partners

Commvault says HyperScale allows partners to sell customers on the value of flexibility and simplicity. Partners can offer HyperScale as an alternative to managing secondary storage in-house while allowing them to turn their on-premise data centers toward a more cloud-like model. Both the HyperScale appliance and software are being sold both direct and through the channel, and Commvault said it is taking steps to make the solutions easy for partners to quote, sell and implement.

Customer Benefits

The HyperScale appliance includes compute, storage, networking, virtualization, and back-up and recovery capabilities, as well as data management and analytics. The company says the platform allows customers to "significantly decrease" complexity and cost. The solution is also being billed as a time saver because it's pre-designed, built and supported by Commvault, meaning customers don't have to spend so much time on buying hardware and system installation, integration, management and updates. Commvault says the appliance, which comes with capacity of 32TB to 80TB, is ideal for managing data across multiple remote or branch offices and data centers.

Shifting Priorities, Strategies

Commvault argues that enterprises are moving toward secondary storage as part of their so-called "IT transformation" efforts. The company says about 70 percent of customer data is consumed as a secondary copy, meaning the market is primed for solutions that provide data protection and management coupled with "cloud-like" services delivered on-premise. "The demands of secondary storage and the need to find new value from secondary copy data is driving customers to find alternatives to storing and managing ever increasing data workloads and move away from traditional scale-up, purpose-built appliances," Commvault argues.

Modern Wares

The company says the software is simple to set up, manage and upgrade, and can easily grow with customers' needs with non-disruptive capacity and performance expansion. The system includes Commvault's high availability and disaster recovery technology, as well as automation, orchestration and self-service capabilities. Commvault has also streamlined its support system, offering centralized patch management and active monitoring as part of the HyperScale software. The result, Commvault says, is better total cost of ownership than legacy solutions, as well as lower initial and overhead costs.

Freedom From Lock-In

Customers looking to buy the software-only version of Commvault HyperScale can deploy it on Cisco, Dell EMC, Fujitsu, Huawei, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo or Supermicro systems. The company says customers can use their own hardware preferences and can choose the size and configuration of hardware models. Matching customers' hardware configurations and capacity to their secondary storage needs allows enterprises to accelerate ROI, reduce complexity and improve customer value, Commvault says.
