Dell Technologies And HPE Server Battle Heats Up

Hewlett Packard Enterprise is narrowing the gap on Dell Technologies’ position as the worldwide server market-share leader. Although the top two server market leaders saw overall server revenue drop in the third quarter of 2019, HPE and its China-based partner, New H3C Group, were able to absorb the impact of a weak global quarter far better than its main competitor Dell, according to research firm IDC.

Following a strong worldwide server revenue report in the third quarter of 2018, server revenue declined 6.7 percent in the third quarter of 2019 to $22 billion. Worldwide server shipments also declined 3 percent in the third quarter year over year to 3.1 million units sold. In terms of server class, volume server revenue was down 4 percent to $17.9 billion, midrange server revenue declined 14 percent to $3 billion, and high-end systems revenue declined by nearly 24 percent to $1.1 billion, according to IDC.

However, while the server market did decline in the third quarter, next-generation workloads and advanced server innovation—such as accelerated computing and storage-class memory—are keeping demand for enterprise compute at near-historic highs, said Paul Maguranis, senior research analyst for infrastructure platforms and technologies at IDC. “In fact, third-quarter 2019 represented the second biggest quarter for global server unit shipments in more than 16 years, eclipsed only by third-quarter 2018,” said Maguranis.

Here were the top five worldwide server market-share leaders for the third quarter of 2019 according to new market data from IDC.
