IoT/Edge Computing Gets A Boost From 5G Rollout
The arrival of 5G doesn't just have implications for users of mobile devices. While the growth of computing at the edge has been underway for years now, high-speed 5G connectivity promises to give the edge and IoT a massive boost. The arrival of 5G is expected to help enable the sorts of real-time data analytics services and other applications at the edge that many businesses are seeking. By 2022, 75 percent of enterprise-generated data will be created and processed outside of a traditional data center or cloud, up from less than 10 percent in 2018, according to Gartner. The spreading availability of 5G connectivity should dramatically improve the performance and reduce the latency of IoT and edge computing. "5G allows you to have that massive IoT—which previous cellular generations have not. They just couldn't scale to thousands of nodes," said Mike Roberts, vice president and head of mobile business unit product and partner marketing at Qualcomm.
