Building Automation, Lighting Will Lead IoT Endpoint Growth

With the growing relevance of things like smart meters in commercial and residential markets, the utilities industry is the largest user of IoT endpoints, representing nearly 1.2 billion endpoints this year, according to research firm Gartner. That number is expected to grow 17 percent to nearly 1.4 billion in 2020. However, building automation, which includes connected lighting is expected to be the No. 1 driver in growth for IoT endpoints next year, with Gartner projecting a 42 percent increase to 440 million endpoints by next year. The next two fastest-growing sectors are government and automotive, which are expected to grow 32 percent and 31 percent, respectively, next year. Healthcare, manufacturing and retail are also expected to drive double-digit growth.
