Algorand aims to upend the blockchain world with a permissionless, pure proof-of-stake protocol that solves blockchain's issues of security, decentralization and scalability.

The Boston-based startup was founded by Turing Award winner Silvio Micali and announced in October that it had raised a $62 million financing round that was backed by a consortium of global investors, including Twitter backer Union Square Ventures.

The company said its blockchain and accompanying cryptocurrency are meant to serve as a foundation for existing businesses and new ventures in a decentralized economy.
