The Best Of CES Unveiled

CES 2019 opens to the public Tuesday, but we got a peek at some of the hottest products on showcase at this year's Las Vegas tech extravaganza during the CES Unveiled media event Sunday. At CES Unveiled 2019, key product areas included the Internet of Things and smart home, artificial intelligence, mobile devices and wearables—with established and up-and-coming vendors taking part.

One key theme was the inclusion of smart voice assistants such as Amazon's Alexa and the Google Assistant in a growing number of connected devices, while new smart home devices featuring advanced sensors were also on display. In terms of new mobile devices and wearables, a smartphone with five cameras and a smartwatch powered by body heat were among the products on showcase. There were also signs of increased innovation in automation at this year's CES Unveiled, with the demonstration of an automated bread-baking system targeted at grocery stores.

Node-ify

Node-ify is a smart home system from Palo Alto Innovation that uses wireless, multisensor devices for a wide variety of smart home applications. The low-power device, called the Axon, comes with an accelerometer, as well as sensors for motion, sound, humidity and temperature that can be used, for instance, to turn on the heat, detect leaks and send alerts when a door is opened. Node-ify is expected to come out later this year, with the Axon tentatively set to cost $30 per unit with an additional recurring subscription fee.

Welt

Welt is a smart belt technology spun out of Samsung that monitors things like waist size, physical activity, sitting duration and eating habits. The belt also provides an ongoing fall risk assessment based on walking speed and how it changes over time. The belt is available as a reference design for $199 on Amazon, and the company plans to eventually sell the technology in partnership with beltmakers in the U.S.

Lubn

Lubn is an autonomous property management system that allows property managers to issue temporary access through a wireless smart key lockbox that reads mobile QR codes. The system is targeted at property managers, Airbnb hosts, service providers and store owners, who will have access to cloud software that allows them to schedule, track and organize access for guests, contractors and other kinds of visitors. The wireless smart key lockbox will be available in the third quarter of 2019 for $349.

Obsbot Tail

The Obsbot Tail is an artificial intelligence-powered video camera made for content creators, with the ability to recognize and track individuals on a three-axis motorized gimbal. The camera comes with a variety of other features, including gesture control and automatic composition adjustment. Powered by a high-end AI chip, the camera will soon be available for preorder on a crowdfunding campaign.

Pivo

Pivo is a smart interactive pod that gives a smartphone's camera face-tracking and other smart capabilities, such as the ability to take a selfie with the snap of a finger. The phone docks into the pod and pairs with an app so that the phone can rotate and track faces and objects on its own, as well as perform other actions. Pivo will retail for $139, and it's expected to start shopping to Kickstarter backers in March.

Bosch Phantom Asset Management Solution

Bosch's Phantom is an asset management hardware and software solution that monitors and analyzes energy usage of devices by plugging into an electrical network, with no requirements to connect individual devices. The hardware device has embedded artificial intelligence capabilities that enable it to provide predictive maintenance recommendations based on the electrical signature of individual devices. The platform also provides management tools, trend reviews and industry benchmarks. Phantom is available now, with the hardware device starting at $250.

DeepRay by Cambridge Consultants

DeepRay is an advanced artificial intelligence technology that can remove distortion from a damaged or obscured camera in real time. The deep learning technology is targeted at autonomous driving, medical imaging, agriculture and other use cases where a camera's view can become compromised by rain, dirt and other potential obstructions. DeepRay will be available for OEMs that want to include the technology in their products.

ForwardX Ovis Suitcase

Ovis is an artificial intelligence-powered suitcase that follows a user around and avoids collisions by using computer vision, neural network algorithms and multiple sensors. The suitcase follows from the side instead of from the rear, so that users can keep an eye on the suitcase at all times. Ovis will be available for $799 in the second quarter of 2019.

Heatworks Tetra Dishwasher

The Tetra is a compact dishwasher from Heatworks that can clean dishes within a matter of minutes using just a gallon of water. The dishwasher has its own water reservoir, meaning that no plumbing is required for the appliance. The appliance relies on Heatworks' patented Ohmic Array Technology, which uses graphite electrodes and advanced electronic controls to instantly heat the water, avoiding rust problems that can occur in metal heating rods found in traditional plumbing systems. The Tetra is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2019 for $399.

Quell by Neurometrix

Quell 2.0 is a wearable device from Neurometrix that provides an over-the-counter, drug-free solution for treating chronic pain. The device uses advanced neurotechnology to stimulate sensor nerves that send neural pulses to the brain that block pain signals. Quell 2.0 is available now for $299.

Snips Commands

Snips Commands is voice command software for connected devices and audio devices that does not require an internet connection to work. The software is fully embedded in a microcontroller device, enabling a low-latency, responsive voice interface that is both cost-effective and compliant with data privacy laws. Snips Commands is available to OEMs and systems integrators now at a flat fee per device.

Targus MiraLogic Workspace Intelligence System

MiraLogic is a workplace intelligence system from Targus that combines hardware and software to track occupancy and energy consumption within a workspace so that companies can optimize the use of their space. The system comes with a smart USB-C dock, smart power strip, smart sensor and desktop power strip, which also provides IT professionals with remote control and management of the workspace. The system is expected to become available in April, but no pricing information is currently available.

Matrix PowerWatch 2

Just unveiled Sunday, the Matrix PowerWatch 2 stands out from other smartwatches with the ability to charge up using a person's body heat and solar cells. That means users will never need to plug in the device, according to manufacturer Matrix Industries. The PowerWatch 2 improves on the previous-generation PowerWatch by adding a color display, as well as GPS connectivity and heart-rate monitoring. The Matrix PowerWatch 2 is available in June for $499 and is open for preorders on Indiegogo now for $199.

HP EliteOne 800 G5 AIO

The EliteOne 800 is HP's first all-in-one PC with its Sure View integrated privacy screen, which reduces almost all visible light when viewed at an angle for enhanced privacy. Sure View can be turned on by pressing a button located underneath the monitor. HP says it has seen demand for the privacy screen not just for notebook users who are in public places, but also for helping to keep sensitive work private in offices. The 23.8-inch display will be available with or without Sure View, and will also be offered as an optional touch screen. The AIO features slim bezels around the display and FHD (1,920 x 1,080) resolution, and a pop-up webcam for added privacy. Available options for the EliteOne 800 G5 AIO include up to 64 GB of RAM, Intel Optane memory, SSD storage and AMD Radeon RX 560 graphics. Security capabilities include HP's Sure Start self-healing BIOS and Sure Click, which ensures that malware doesn't leave browser tabs to reach the PC. The HP EliteOne 800 G5 AIO is available in July. Pricing has not been disclosed.

Jabra Elite 85h

Jabra, a maker of headphones for consumers and businesses, debuted a new pair of high-end consumer headphones during CES Unveiled 2019, the Elite 85h. The headphones aim to stand out with what Jabra is calling "best-in-class" Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) that adjusts depending on the specific noises of the environment, along with up to 32 hours of battery life on a charge and six microphones for improved calls. The Elite 85h also offers voice assistant control with Amazon's Alexa assistant (available when the headphones are paired with either iPhone or Android devices), or with Google Assistant or Siri (only available when paired with native devices). And, activating a voice assistant on the Elite 85h can be done using the standard wake word rather than the common headphones method of pressing a button, Jabra said. The Jabra Elite 85h will be available in April for $299.

Cosmo Communicator

Last year at CES Unveiled, Planet Computers showed off a new personal digital assistant, the Gemini, which folded open to reveal a physical keyboard attached to a full-fledged Android smartphone. This year at CES Unveiled, Planet Computers was back with an update to its PDA concept—the Cosmo Communicator, which features several major enhancements. First and foremost, the device now has an external 1.9-inch touch screen that provides much of the functionality of the phone—including notifications and the ability to make calls—so that users do not need to open up the device unless they want to use the keyboard. The camera has been improve as well, with the Cosmo Communicator adding a 24-megapixel external camera to join the previously included 5-megapixel internal camera. The specs have also been enhanced, with the device moving up to a faster Mediatek processor, 6 GB of RAM rather than 4 GB, and 128 GB of storage rather than 64 GB. The smartphone display remains at 5.99 inches with FHD+ resolution, but the keyboard now sports backlighting on the new model. The Cosmo Communicator will be available in June for $799.

Parcel Guard

Danby Appliances used CES Unveiled 2019 to show off Parcel Guard, an anti-theft connected mailbox. The mailbox consists of upper and lower sections, where parcels can be placed inside the top section and automatically drop down to a locked lower section. The mailbox is made from industrial-grade plastic and includes both a motion-activated camera and a tamper alarm (which resembles a car alarm). The Parcel Guard can also double as a method for leaving items for others—with the ability to unlock the lower section by scanning a one-time use code. The Parcel Guard will be available in February for $399.

LG V40 ThinQ

LG used CES Unveiled 2019 to showcase its newest V series smartphone, the V40 ThinQ—and this time the phone comes with five cameras. The phone is the first to pull off the five-camera feat, with three rear cameras and two front cameras for enhanced photos and a wider range of photo-taking options. For instance, the V40 ThinQ enables users to capture three photos at once—standard, telephoto zoom and super wide-angle. LG's V40 ThinQ also features a 6.4-inch QHD+ display, improved audio (including from a bass-heavy Boombox Speaker) and the Google Assistant built in. The LG V40 ThinQ is available now, with a starting price of $949.99 for an unlocked model from LG.

BreadBot

One of the big draws at CES Unveiled 2019 was the BreadBot, an automated bread-baking system developed by the Wilkinson Baking Company. Targeted at grocery stores and institutions such as schools and the military, the BreadBot can automatically make bread at scale from scratch—all that humans need to do is add the bread mix and yeast. The system is scheduled to go into proof-of-concept testing in the second quarter of the year with three of the five largest U.S. grocery chains, according to the company.

Dell UltraSharp 27 USB-C Monitor

Among Dell's coolest new products on showcase at CES Unveiled 2019 was the UltraSharp 27 USB-C Monitor U2719DC, a 27-inch monitor with impressive image quality. The display features QHD (2,560 x 1,440) resolution—providing nearly twice the picture details of an FHD monitor—with precise hues thanks to 99 percent sRGB coverage. The display itself is thin as well, measuring just 0.25 of an inch, while the monitor's base is 29 percent smaller than a predecessor monitor, according to Dell. The UltraSharp 27 monitor also includes USB-C connectivity for connecting to laptops and other devices, and comes packaged with a USB-C cable, too. The Dell UltraSharp 27 USB-C Monitor is available now for $519.99.

Onelink Smart Smoke And Carbon Monoxide Alarm

First Alert used CES Unveiled 2019 to show off the second-generation model of its Onelink Smart Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm. The new Smart Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm comes in both hardwired and battery-powered versions. Importantly, it notifies users of smoke and carbon monoxide emergencies using voice alerts as well as with alerts sent to smartphones. The device can be voice-controlled using Amazon Alexa devices as well as Apple HomeKit. The Onelink Smart Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm is available now for $119.99.

Sandman Doppler

Another Alexa-powered device on showcase at CES Unveiled 2019 was Palo Alto Innovation's Sandman Doppler, a smart alarm clock that aims to offer the full functionality of the Amazon Echo along with some added features. Along with serving as a standard alarm clock, the Sandman Doppler provides six USB-A ports for charging devices. The device features Amazon's Alexa assistant built in, and includes stereo speakers for high-quality audio, according to Palo Alto Innovation. The Sandman Doppler is expected to be available this summer for $149.99.

BlackBerry Secure Feature Packs

The plethora of connected IoT devices hitting the market hasn't always been great for security, which is something BlackBerry is aiming to address with a security solution expansion announced at CES Unveiled 2019. The company said it will now offer the BlackBerry Secure Enablement Feature Pack that allows IoT device makers to license BlackBerry security software that can be integrated during manufacturing as a way to save manufacturers from needing to build their own cybersecurity teams. The company also unveiled the BlackBerry Secure Enterprise Feature Pack, which is tailored to devices that will be used in regulated environments by offering deeper control than that of Android Enterprise.

Da Vinci Color Mini 3-D Printer

XYZ Printing showed off its new full-color 3-D printer at CES Unveiled 2019, the Da Vinci Color Mini, which aims to print high-quality color objects for consumer users and prototype makers. The Da Vinci Color Mini combines newly developed 2-D inkjet color printing technology with 3-D printing technology, applying CMY ink to a color-absorbing PLA filament as a way to offer "millions of color combinations," XYZ printing said. The 3-D printer offers layer resolution of 100 to 400 microns and a maximum build area of 5.1 x 5.1 x 5.1 inches, and weighs 52.9 pounds for easier portability. The Da Vinci Color Mini is scheduled to be available in March for $1,599.

Lume Cube AIR VC

As videoconferencing continues growing in importance for the modern workforce, the Lume Cube AIR VC is targeted as a portable lighting solution for remote workers—ultimately providing a more vibrant video picture for conferencing. The light attaches a PC using a suction-cup mount and offers up to 1,000 lumens worth of brightness. The brightness level can be adjusted with a control on the light itself or using a smartphone app. The Lume Cube AIR VC is available now for $79.95.
