Joe Balsarotti of Software To Go has had a number of customers whose computers were accidentally upgraded to Windows 10 -- a "forced upgrade," he calls it -- and it "rendered something inoperable, either a specialized printer or a piece of equipment."

The result: "We had to roll it back" to the prior version of Windows, he said.

Tim Lynch, CEO of Psychsoft, a Quincy, Mass.-based Microsoft partner, said older versions of QuickBooks accounting software is one product that he's found to be incompatible with Windows 10 for his customers. "A lot of businesses are going to be reluctant to upgrade to Windows 10 because their whole business is reliant on QuickBooks," Lynch said.
