The big growth for Apple tablets during the third quarter saw the Cupertino, Calif.-based company bring in more than half of tablet sales through distributors and commerical resellers. Apple accounted for 53.7 percent of tablet sales in the market during the third quarter -- a major jump from a year earlier, when the company had market share of 44.2 percent, according to The NPD Group. Apple's newest 9.7-inch iPad dominated the list of top models sold through distributors during the third quarter. The tablet features Apple's Retina display technology, an upgraded processor, and a starting price of $329 (compared to the $399 iPad Air 2).

The 9.7-inch, 32-GB iPad in Space Gray was the No. 1 tablet sold via distributors in the third quarter, while half of all of the top 10 models were variations of the newest 9.7-inch iPad, according to The NPD Group findings. In addition, the iPad Mini 4 ranked as the No. 3 tablet during the quarter.
