Price

Apple's latest 13-inch MacBook Pro and Microsoft's Surface Laptop 3 both offer what might be considered entry-level price options. The 13-inch MacBook Pro price starts at $1,299, but that model would come with an eighth-gen Intel Core i5 chip. The Surface Laptop 3 price starts at $300 below that amount--$999--and for that amount you would get a 10th-gen Core i5. However, that model only gets you 128 GB of storage, versus 256 GB of storage on the MacBook Pro. So, there are some clear tradeoffs.

If we instead look at the MacBook Pro models with 10th-gen Intel processors, the price gap increases. Pricing for a 13-inch MacBook Pro model with a 10th-gen Core i5 processor starts at $1,799, but that price also will get you 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. The closest model on specs in the Surface Laptop 3 lineup comes with a 10th-gen Core i5, 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, for $1,499.

We can get a closer comparison on price if we move up to Core i7. For models with 10th-gen Core i7, 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, both the MacBook Pro 2020 price and the Surface Laptop 3 price come in at $1,999.
