Dell Takes No. 1 PC Position In US, Followed By HP And Lenovo

Dell’s red-hot PC sales growth was on full display in the fourth quarter of 2021, as Dell overtook Hewlett Packard as the U.S. market share leader in terms of PC shipments.

A total of 20.65 million PC units were shipped in the U.S. in the fourth quarter, representing a decrease of 24 percent year over year, according to new data from IT market research firm Gartner. On a global basis, total PC shipments dropped 5 percent year over year in the fourth quarter to 88.4 million units.

“A sharp decline in the U.S. PC market, caused by ongoing supply chain issues and the collapse in demand for Chromebooks, drove this quarter’s slowdown,” said Mikako Kitagawa, research director at Gartner in a statement. “This likely signifies the end of the massive and unexpected growth in PC demand triggered by the pandemic.”

The 24 percent decrease in the U.S. was driven by weak Chromebook shipments as demand from the education sector continues to slow as well as supply chain delays that affected shipment volumes, especially in the large enterprise market. Gartner’s market share data consists of desk-based PCs, notebook PCs, ultramobile premiums and Chromebooks, but not iPads, that were shipped in the U.S.
