Port Washington, N.Y.-based NPD tracks monthly sales data from the largest distributors and resellers in North America.

The big increase in sales came as some of the sector's top vendors, including Netgear, Arris, Cisco Systems and Linksys, notched huge gains in gateway sales through the channel, according to NPD. But while those companies boosted sales, they did so at the expense of Cradlepoint, the only vendor to see a year-over-year decline during the quarter.

Here are the five vendors that sold the most gateways in the fourth quarter.

5. Linksys

Linksys sold 671 gateways through the channel in the fourth quarter, according to NPD. That's a nearly 210 percent increase from the 216 it sold in the same period a year ago, according to NPD, and good for a 2.7 percent share of the market. The Irvine, Calif.-based company's SPA8000-G1 gateway was the eighth-best-selling unit through the channel during the quarter, NPD said.

4. Cisco

After selling just 21 gateways through the channel a year ago, Cisco sold 779 in the most recent quarter, according to NPD. The San Jose, Calif., networking giant held a 3.2 percent share of the market during the quarter and its Z3HW gateway was the sixth-best-selling unit during the period, NPD said.

3. Arris

Suwanee, Ga.-based Arris, which completed its acquisition of Ruckus Wireless in early December, sold 835 gateways through the channel during the fourth quarter, according to NPD. That's up from 150 units in the same period a year ago and enough to secure a 3.4 percent share of the market. Arris' SBG6400 was the fifth-best-selling gateway during the quarter, according to NPD.

2. Cradlepoint

With its AER1600 and AER1650 gateways selling the second-, third- and fourth-most units during the quarter, Boise, Idaho-based Cradlepoint appears to have a strong position in the market, but it is the only vendor in the top five to cede sales during the period, according to NPD. Cradlepoint sold 7,699 gateways through the channel during the period compared with 9,344 in the same period a year ago, NPD said, a more than 17 percent slip. Cradlepoint's share of the market slipped to 31.5 percent from 58.9 percent a year ago.

1. Netgear

Netgear's 450100NAS model was the best-selling gateway through the channel in the fourth quarter, NPD said. In total, the San Jose, Calif.-based company sold 11,964 gateways in the period, up from 2,389 in the same period the prior year. The total gave the company a 48.9 percent share of the market compared with a share of 15.1 percent in the year-ago period.
