Market consolidation and startups entering the fold affected the edge computing space in 2020, but perhaps no force was as powerful as the COVID-19 pandemic, which changed the IT landscape all over the globe and brought with a slew of new opportunities as the edge – not the campus or data center – network.

9. Cisco Scoops Up FluidMesh For Wireless IoT

Cisco Systems in April announced plans to acquire privately-held Fluidmesh Networks to bolster wireless connectivity and simplify the extraction of IoT data at the edge of the network.

Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Fluidmesh Networks manufactures hardware and software of wireless point-to-point networks and wireless mesh networks. Now with Cisco, the two companies are said to be building on Cisco‘s industrial IoT strategy with the addition of Fluidmesh’s wireless technology that can reach critical, on-the-move IoT applications, Cisco said.

The two companies did not disclose terms of the deal.
