The Battle Of The WANs

Consolidation struck again last week when Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company, unveiled its plans to acquire software-defined WAN leader Silver Peak for approximately $925 million in cash, filling a portion of HPE’s networking portfolio.

But Silver Peak used to specialize in WAN optimization and premise-based technology before moving into the SD-WAN space, and WAN optimization isn‘t required for newer, real-time applications, said

Sanjay Uppal, VeloCloud founder and senior vice president and general manager of VMware‘s VeloCloud business unit. VeloCloud, on the other hand, started off fresh in the cloud networking space having gotten its start in 2012. Delivering networking functions as a service is critical now and will continue to be important, especially as businesses around the globe emerge from the other side of the COVID-19 crisis that has changed fundamental networking needs, potentially forever.

Uppal talked with CRN about VeloCloud’s flavor of SD-WAN compared to the competition, the evolving (and shrinking) SD-WAN market, and how HPE’s Silver Peak purchase “misses the mark.” Here are excerpts from the conversation.
