America’s 15 Best IT Jobs In 2020: Glassdoor

Front-end engineer is the No. 1 job in the United States based on the “Best Jobs in America 2020” report from Glassdoor, whose lists also includes 14 other information technology positions ranked as the best IT jobs.

Front-end engineer has deposed data scientist as the No. 1 job in the United States after the latter position held the title for the last four years, according to the “Best Jobs in America 2020” report from online job listing and recruiting site Glassdoor.

Front-end engineer topped the list of 50 best jobs, 15 of which are in the IT field.

Glassdoor’s economic research team compiled the report based on the median annual base salaries for jobs reported on Glassdoor.com in the last year and the number of U.S. open job openings for the positions that were listed on the site as of Dec. 18, 2019. The rankings also factor in overall job satisfaction ratings -- on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 denoting the best job – reported on Glassdoor by employees working in the listed roles in the past year. C-level jobs were excluded from the list.

A front-end engineer selects, installs and tests the user interface elements of websites, focusing on the sites’ look, feel and functionality. The position comes with a median base salary of $105,240 and a job-satisfaction rating of 3.9 out of 5.

Automation Engineer And Network Engineer

An automation engineer, a role that involves delivering automated solutions for software processes, is No. 46 on the Glassdoor list. The position has an $85,456 median base salary and 3.8 job satisfaction rating.

Network engineer ranks 49th on the list with a $71,028 median base salary and a 3.6 job satisfaction rating. A network engineer manages and maintains computer networks and associated systems including software, hardware and applications to ensure they are up-to-date and run smoothly.

Cloud Engineer And Data Analyst

No. 33 on the list is cloud engineer, which has a $110,600 median base salary and 3.6 job satisfaction rating. A cloud engineer is responsible for technology duties associated with cloud computing, including design, planning, management, maintenance and support of cloud systems, and assessing organizations’ infrastructures and migrating their workloads to the cloud.

Data analyst places 44th on Glassdoor’s best jobs lists with a $62,973 median base salary and 3.7 job satisfaction rating. A data analyst designs and maintains data systems and databases, collects data using computerized models, assesses the quality of data and organizes it, and uses statistical tools to analyze the data to determine the meaning and identify patterns and trends that are useful to a business.

Scrum Master And Software Developer

Scrum master is 29th on the list with a median base salary of $100,000 and a 3.8 job satisfaction rating. A scrum master helps oversee the scrum (an agile methodology for project management) and development team, and acts as a buffer between the scrum team and product owner.

Software developer ranks 32nd on Glassdoor’s list. The position has a median base salary of $80,429 and a 3.5 job satisfaction rating. A software developer serves as a member of a software development team, working alongside programmers to code programs to facilitate the proper design and implementation of software.

Applications Engineer And Systems Engineer

At 18th on Glassdoor’s list, the position of applications engineer has a $76,854 median salary and 3.7 job satisfaction rating. Application engineers use customers’ input and sales data to design, test and implement software applications and programs, and they provide technical support to customers.

Systems engineer is 27th on the list. The median base salary is $92,225 for the position, which has a 3.5 job satisfaction rating. Systems engineers manage and develop systems and infrastructure within a company.

Software Engineer And Salesforce Developer

Software engineer ranked as the seventh best job, with a median base salary of $105,563 and a 3.6 job satisfaction rating. Software engineers write, debug, maintain and test software that instructs a computer to accomplish certain tasks, such as saving information, performing calculations, etc., by converting what needs to happen into a programming language.

A Salesforce developer is 14th on the list for best jobs, with a $81,175 median base salary and 4.2 job satisfaction rating. A Salesforce developer is a programmer who creates functionality and solves problems in Salesforce software, with responsibilities including creating and maintaining websites and applications.

DevOps Engineer And Data Engineer

DevOps engineer placed fifth on Glassdoor’s overall list of the top U.S. jobs.

A DevOps engineer has a $107,310 median base salary, and the role has a 3.9 job satisfaction rating. A DevOps engineer combines understandings of engineering and coding, working with various departments to develop and implement systems software and analyze data to improve existing systems and increase workplace productivity.

Glassdoor listed data engineer as the sixth best overall job and the fifth best IT job. Data engineers transform data into a format that can be easily analyzed by developing, maintaining and testing infrastructures for data generation. The median base salary is $102,472 for the role, which also has a 3.9 job satisfaction rating.

Java Developer And Data Scientist

Java developer and data scientist were the Nos. 2 and 3 best IT jobs on the list and held those positions in the overall rankings.

A java developer uses the Java computer programming language to design, develop and maintain web applications, software and systems. Glassdoor lists an $83,589 median base salary for the role, which has a 3.9 job satisfaction rating.

Data scientist fell to No. 3 on the list after four years in the top position. A data scientist uses analytical, statistical and programming skills to collect, analyze and interpret large data sets to develop data-driven solutions to solve difficult business challenges. The position has a median base salary of $107,801 and a job satisfaction rating of 4.
