1. Utah

With the highest pay deferential in the country in 2019, women earned $16,871 less than their male counterparts in the tech industry.

Across all industries, Utah has one of the largest gender pay gaps. Equal Pay Day — the day that symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year — landed on April 2 in 2019. Utah does not have a separate equal pay law requiring that men and women be paid equally for equal work. However, under the Utah Antidiscrimination Act, employers are prohibited from compensation discrimination based on race, color, sex, pregnancy and childbirth, age (40 years and over), religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. The law says its illegal for an employer to pay different wages or salaries to employees having substantially equal experience, responsibilities, and skills for the particular job.
