10 Things To Know About The $5.8B Permira-Mimecast Deal

Michael Novinson

Here’s a look at how Mimecast can leverage Permira’s deep pockets to its advantage, the possibility of another buyer coming in with a superior bid, and why email security vendors have made such appealing acquisition targets.

9. Mimecast Has Made Six Acquisitions In Recent Years

The company has expanded beyond email security over the past three-and-a-half years via acquisitions. Mimecast kicked things off in July 2018 with its $23.2 million purchase of security training startup Ataata to help customers mitigate risk and reduce employee security errors, and weeks later bought Solebit for $96.5 million to boost its protection against advanced cyberattacks, zero-day threats and malware.

In January 2019, Mimecast purchased data migration technology provider Simply Migrate for $7.2 million to help customers and prospects move to the cloud more quickly, reliably, and inexpensively. Ten months later, Mimecast acquired DMARC Analyzer for $21.1 million to reduce the time, effort and cost associated with stopping domain spoofing attacks.

At the start of 2020, Mimecast purchased Segasec for $24.2 million to help customers better defend against attacks that leverage fake websites and domains for credential harvesting. Then in July 2020, Mimecast bought email security startup MessageControl for $17 million to help stop social engineering and human identity attacks through the use of machine-learning technology.
