Batten Down The Hatches: 10 Security Players That Stormed Interop NYC

Keeping It Secure

Now more than ever the spotlight is shining on security, as IT pros struggled to lock down their networks, make their data impenetrable and move applications into the cloud computing ether.

With that in mind, security was a major focus of Interop New York 2010, much like it has been through Interop NY's previous five shows.

Here we take a look at 10 data security vendors that converged on the Interop show floor's security zone and what they came to Interop to do.

WatchGuard

WatchGuard wasn't about subtlety at Interop NYC this year. Nope. The security vendor had attendees seeing red ... in the form of their network security appliances. At center stage was its XTM next generation firewalls that offer cloud-based security with reputation-enabled defense. The XTM Firewall can control and block a host of popular applications like Facebook, Twitter, Gmail and more than 2,000 more, the company said. It also offers hacking protection with built-in intrusion prevention.

CyberRoam

At Interop New York, CyberRoam showed off its identity-based unified threat management offerings, or UTM+. Consider it UTM on steroids, tying in NAC capabilities and total bandwidth management functionality. The NAC and TBM are on top of the UTM capabilities already packed in, like firewall, VPN, anti-virus, anti-spam, intrusion detection and prevention and URL and content filtering.

Ezenia

Ezenia showcased its MxM Secure 2.0 offering, which keeps digital communications secure in real-time. Ezenia MxM 2.0 features advanced auditing and reporting, collaborative whiteboard, secure desktop sharing, secure text and audio chat, situational awareness and virtual places. MxM Secure is aimed at organizations that need to communicate and collaborate in real-time but need to satisfy regulatory compliance.

TriGeo SIM

Want to know what's going on in your network? TriGeo SIM (that's short for security information management) wants to show you. Offering log management, real-time analysis, event correlation, endpoint security with USB-Defender and proactive network defense, SIM shows what's going on in the network.

Thycotic

Not worried about password management? You should be. And Thycotic showed Interop attendees how to manage privileged accounts and manage passwords through its Secret Server system. Secret Server lets IT pros store, distribute, organize and update privileged and shared accounts in a central, Web-based location. Secret Server uses AES 256 encryption and can generate User Audit Reports to let users assess vulnerability when someone leaves a company or their passwords/privileges are no longer active. Admins can manage users through groups and assign permissions at group and user levels.

Ciphertex Data Security

Ciphertex Data Security used Interop New York as the launch pad for its Ciphertex CX-5000NAS AES 256 Secure Network Storage Appliance, a portable solution for secure network storage in virtualization environments for VMware, Citrix and Microsoft Windows. The devices let IT managers securely store, share and use digital assets and documents and the appliance can house up to five 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA hard disk drives while incorporating Intel Atom 1.8 GHz dual core processors with 1 GB of memory.

Comodo

Comodo made waves at Interop New York this week with the release of its Internet Security Manager 2011. The software offers malware protection and central administration capabilities that let users lock down dozens to thousands of PCs and stop viruses and malware before the PCs become infected through its patent-pending sandbox technology. And Comodo didn't slouch with the updates to Internet Security Manager 2011, as the new release of the software adds behavior analytics and fully integrated cloud scanning to the mix. Other new features that are fresh for Comodo Internet Security Manager 2011 include application whitelisting; spyware scanner and improved malware cleaning; cloud-based behavior analysis and anti-virus scanning; game mode; and a new user interface.

Cymphonix

Cymphonix highlighted its Secure Web Gateway product family, Network Composer, that provide visibility into the network and leverage Cymphonix's Xli operating system software. The technology offers application visibility, Web filtering, a reporting engine and a host of other features and functions to give admins control over the Web and the network.

Astaro

While Astaro highlighted its suite of security gateways that offer everything from network security, Web security, mail security to Web application security, it was Astaro's just released Wireless Security that received the spotlight. Astaro Wireless Security includes a subscription that turns the Astaro Security Gateway into a wireless controller as well as dedicated Astaro Wireless Access Points to be placed throughout an organization as needed. This method integrates seamlessly with the security policy in place and therefore offers the same level of UTM security to wireless clients as if they were connected via LAN.

Barracuda Networks

Interop's Security Zone wouldn't be complete without an appearance from Barracuda Networks, a crowd favorite and a swiftly growing player in the security, network and storage games. Among the solutions Barracuda had on tap at Interop New York were the NG Firewall hardware and virtual appliance, spam and virus firewall, Web application firewall, Web filtering, IM firewall, SSL VPN and Web filtering firewall.
