NVMe On The Rise

The solid-state array market cracked $6.3 billion in 2017, representing a 27 percent annual sales increase, as Nonvolatile Memory Express (NVMe) technology takes center stage, according to Gartner's 2018 Magic Quadrant for Solid State Arrays.

Many solid-state arrays (SSAs) in 2018 will leverage the new high-performance internal NVMe protocol. By 2021, SSAs that use NVMe internally will represent more than 30 percent of total market revenues, up from less than 1 percent in 2017. SSAs that use external NVMe over fabric connections to servers and storage area networks (SANs) will represent less than 30 percent of overall sales by 2021, up from less than 1 percent this year.

Solid-state arrays are sold with performance, capacity, reliability and extensive upgrade guarantees, which Gartner says makes the market extremely competitive.
