Apeiron's Secret Sauce Is Its Software Data Fabric

Yes, the company develops high-performance storage arrays that combine NVMe flash storage and Ethernet, but the server on which the arrays is based is an industry-standard server. The functionality is all in the software. That software is anchored on the Apeiron Data System, or ADS, fabric that allows NVMe flash storage to connect directly to Ethernet networks. The result, the company says, is the industry's fastest and only networked storage system that brings native NVMe technology across a built-in 40-Gbit Ethernet network.

Smith acknowledged that there are a lot of companies developing storage using NVMe flash technology. Apeiron's key differentiator, he said, is the software-defined Apeiron Data Fabric. "It's the fabric to the storage where we have created essentially a low-latency, end-to-end fabric," he said. "That's the software-defined layer that is differentiable."

Jim Steed, a top sales executive for Apeiron, says the data fabric software effectively eliminates the storage bottlenecks that typically plague big data solutions. "The Apeiron data fabric is the secret sauce," he said. "It allows you to get a lower capex and lower opex without any bottlenecks. That software - moving and connecting storage and compute - has never been done before the way we did it. That is the differentiator."
