AWS re 10 New Ways To Connect Storage To AWS

These 10 vendors used AWS re:Invent to show new ways partners and customers can bridge data across on-premises and AWS environments with new capabilities including NVMe, artificial intelligence, machine learning, analytics, and more.

Storage Takes A Bow At AWS re:Invent

The AWS re:Invent conference showcases a wide range of third-party offerings aimed at helping businesses learn new ways to work with Amazon Web Services across a wide range of technologies. Included in there is a large contingent of storage and data management vendors who demonstrated new ways to use the AWS cloud to manage data protection, archiving, and disaster recovery as well as take advantage of customers' increasing need for artificial intelligence, machine learning, and analytics to better manage their cloud-based workloads.

CRN has collected information from 10 storage-focused exhibitors who are either showing new storage hardware or software offerings aimed at the AWS ecosystem for the first time, or have introduced them in the last few months.

Amazon S3 Access Points

For users looking to use Amazon S3 to store shared data sets, Amazon used its AWS re:Invent conference to introduce Amazon S3 Access Points, which is a feature of its S3 storage. Amazon S3 Access Points is aimed at managing data across a shared bucket with a single bucket policy that controls access for dozens to hundreds of applications with different permission levels. It provides access points, which are unique hostnames that customers create to enforce distinct permissions and network controls for any request made through the access point, and scales to multiple applications using shared data in data lakes, media archives, and user-generated content. An access point can be restricted to a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) to firewall S3 data access within customers’ private networks.

Clumio Enterprise Backup as a Service for AWS Native Services

Clumio, a Santa Clara, Calif.-based developer of enterprise backup-as-a-service which just in August came out of stealth, used AWS re:Invent to introduce the Clumio Enterprise Backup as a Service for AWS Native Services. It is a secure enterprise-focused SaaS offering aimed at eliminating the complexity of software and hardware management. Clumio consolidates the protection of data centers, remote sites, and AWS native services with no hardware or software to size, configure, manage, or purchase.

Hammerspace Hybrid Cloud File Service

Los Alto, Calif.-based Hammerspace's new Hybrid Cloud File Service abstracts complex and diverse infrastructure to simplify multi-cloud data sharing, on-demand cloud bursting, disaster recovery, and Kubernetes data management. It helps provide global accessibility of data across cloud and Kubernetes environments to help businesses improve data agility, control, and efficiency while making data readily accessible for users without any impact on performance and protecting it across multiple sites. The offering also includes machine learning to help continuous optimization for performance and cost.

Igneous DataProtect Backup as-a-Service Direct to AWS

Seattle-based Igneous unveiled a software-only version of its DataProtect backup and archive service that writes data directly to any AWS S3 storage, including S3, Standard-IA, Glacier, and Glacier Deep Archive. It is delivered as-a-service, and provides data protection and archiving for business' massive unstructured, machine-generated file and object data. Igneous claims the release of Igneous DataProtect Backup as-a-Service Direct to AWS provides a simple and cost-effective way to protect file and object data at scale directly to any AWS tier of public cloud storage and letting clients pay only for the capacity used.

Komprise Cloud Data Growth Analytics

AWS re:Invent also so the introduction of Komprise Cloud Data Growth Analytics, a new offering from Campbell, Calif.-based Komprise that provides enterprises a single view of data across all their cloud accounts and buckets to help them understand how data is being used, how it is growing in the cloud, and how much it costs them. Businesses can set policies for moving cold data to lower tiers and instantly see projected savings thanks to the analytics provided. A single management pane manages data across on-premises and cloud environments.

Nasuni File Services Platform

October saw the introduction of version 8.7 of the Nasuni File Services Platform, which Boston-based Nasuni showed at AWS re:Invent. New capabilities for the offering include the ability to export a temporary second copy of file data to use with analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and search software. It now also offers services to help move data to Amazon S3 or Microsoft Azure quickly and efficiently, and now support Google Cloud Services as well as private cloud solutions such as NetApp StorageGRID, Nutanix Objects, IBM COS, Hitachi Vantara HCP, and Scality RING.

Qumulo P-184T All-NVMe File Storage

Seattle-based Qumulo was at AWS re:Invent showing how its new P-184T all-NVMe file storage system works with Qumulo's cloud-native file system to allow businesses move file-based applications and workloads to the public cloud. The software-defined storage-based P-184T provides high-performance capture of data across on-premises and cloud environments for real-time analytics using artificial intelligence and machine learning to help businesses better understand their storage at a granular level, detect bottlenecks, and accelerate performance.

Veeam Backup for Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Baar, Switzerland-based Veeam used AWS re:Invent to officially unveil its new Veeam Backup for AWS. Veeam Backup for AWS provides cost-effective, secure cloud-native Amazon EC2 data protection. It was designed specifically for providing simple, flexible, and reliable native backup protection in AWS environments, which Veeam said helps customers and cloud service providers to natively protect, manage and recover AWS workloads. Veeam Backup for AWS seamlessly integrates with Veeam’s flagship product, Veeam Backup & Replication so that Veeam users can manage all their data within the same platform. It is available via the AWS Marketplace in a free entry-level version as well as paid versions.

Zadara SQL Standard Edition

The Zadara SQL Standard Edition fully managed hybrid cloud storage platform was unveiled at AWS re:Invent as a way to help enterprises more easily migrate SQL Server database applications to the cloud in a phased manner. The Irvine, Calif.-based company said that high availability is possible via Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Edition, but it is costly for customers who need only the high availability capabilities. Zadara’s SQL Standard Edition offering helps businesses get high availability using SQL Standard Edition within AWS environments with the cost and complexity of SQL Enterprise Edition.

Zerto 7.5

Boston-based Zerto was at AWS re:Invent 2019 to unveil support for AWS Storage File Gateway for cloud backup and long-term retention storage in the cloud with Zerto version 7.5. Zerto’s IT Resilience Platform brings disaster recovery, backup, and workload mobility into a single offering, with continuous data protection for cloud agility, enhanced security, platform updates and advanced analytics. New features in version 7.5 include expanded functionality with Microsoft Azure, including support for Azure Managed Disks, scale-sets, and Azure VMware Solution; integration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise's StoreOnce Catalyst and the AWS Storage File Gateway; certification and support for VMware vSphere APIs for I/O Filtering (VAIO); and advanced analytics for reporting, planning, and customization of disaster recovery and long-term data retention.
