The definition of “cloud storage” has recently become very flexible. It’s not all about the cloud. And it’s not all about storage. Instead, cloud storage encompasses a wide range of technologies from straight-forward backup and recovery software to sophisticated technologies that seamlessly tie data across on-premises, private clouds, and public clouds and treat it the same no matter where it resides.
As the definition of “cloud storage” has morphed, so has the kinds of companies that offer the technology. While it used to be the domain of software vendors, today legacy storage hardware vendors like NetApp and Pure Storage are very active leaders in the cloud storage space given the need of customers to know their data is accessible and protected no matter where it resides or how it moves.
Anyone looking for a list of software vendors here will be disappointed. Cloud storage is all about the data, not where it sits. And as part of CRN’s 2022 Cloud 100, this list of 20 cloud storage vendors proves our point.
