SolarWinds Security Exec Timothy Brown: MSPs ‘Top Of My Risk Level’

O’Ryan Johnson

‘The MSP is that crown jewel. There’s a few of them inside the organization. They are the most important one because of the reach, and because of the attack service they present, and the risk that they present. If someone gets to us, they get to the MSPs, they get to the clients, and yeah, people are off living on islands somewhere in the South Pacific.’

What do you see as your mission at SolarWinds?

We have a lot of technicians that have come into the security industry. One of things we end up missing is something of a vision and trying to understand what it is you are trying to do, what your mission is.

My broad-based mission is to basically eliminate anything that is material damage to my company. I know I can’t eliminate everything. So, that’s the first rule. So what do I eliminate that would be materially damaging to my company? Then I highlight those to the most ability.

Giving credit to CapitalOne. Was it materially damaging to them? A blip in the stock, but did they lose money? Did they get a major hack that caused a compromise of their money transfers? No. They did not. So it could have been that was part of the land they were willing to give up. That’s a very important concept for people to understand is what are they willing to give up?

Who are the 20 percent of people who can cause harm to your company? Who are the 80 percent that cannot. Put basic security in front of the 80, but then really nail down the 20. Really take care of them to the fullest extent possible.
