Simplifying Cybersecurity: ThreatLocker’s Rob Allen At XChange Security 2025
At the recent XChange Security event held in July 2025, Rob Allen, chief product officer of ThreatLocker, delivered a keynote presentation that focused on the critical aspects of simplifying cybersecurity through innovative solutions like Allowlisting, Ringfencing and ThreatLocker Detect.
Allen began by emphasizing the importance of allowlisting and blocking untrusted software in fighting against ransomware. He explained that applications blocked at the system level ensure that even if an attacker gains system access, they won't be able to execute malicious activities.
One of the standout features discussed was Ringfencing, which Allen described as "really, really important." He elaborated on how Ringfencing controls network access, preventing programs like PowerShell from downloading payloads or running remote code in memory. "Block it from accessing the Internet. You're going to stop so many attacks," Allen advised, underscoring the effectiveness of this approach in thwarting cyber threats.
Allen also introduced the ThreatLocker Store, a recent addition designed to enhance user experience. He shared a common frustration among users: "You're trying to install a PDF tool, and it gets blocked. Wouldn't it be much better if when something gets blocked, you can actually tell people what is available to them?" The ThreatLocker Store addresses this by providing approved alternatives and download links, improving both user experience and IT department approval ratings.
Another significant development is ThreatLocker's new web filtering service. Allen pointed out the challenges with traditional DNS-based web filtering, which can be unreliable and frustrating for users.
