AI At The Edge: How AMD And Supermicro Are Transforming Retail

Retailers today face mounting pressure to create seamless shopping experiences while reducing operational complexity. AI is leading that evolution, transforming everything from loss prevention and inventory to customer personalization. That’s where AMD and Supermicro’s high-performance infrastructure comes in.

Artificial intelligence thrives on data, and in retail, that means everything from receipts and inventory reports to video surveillance. Supermicro and AMD provide the powerful, scalable platforms retailers need to turn that data into real-time, actionable insights.

“AI can take that information from POS systems, inventory management, look at it, and start to identify trends, said Marc Del Vecchio, staff solution manager at Supermicro said. “What stores are selling certain items versus other stores? How could they better serve their customers, be more efficient with operations?”

Their shared infrastructure is optimized for both in-store edge deployments and large-scale data center AI workloads. From loss prevention to supply chain automation, the partnership delivers enterprise-grade compute where it's needed most.

“Retailers need to look at how they can implement initiatives that help reduce costs, drive more revenue and delight customers ultimately,” said Aaron Behman, global lead, Retail & E-Commerce, Server BU at AMD. “I see AI playing a substantial role in supporting all of those.”

Grand View Research estimates the global artificial intelligence in retail market size will be $14.49 billion in 2025, and grow to more than $40 billion by 2030. That means AI at the edge needs to be compact, rugged and efficient in order to meet real-world demands.

“We work closely with AMD when we design our systems,” said Del Vecchio. “We make sure our edge systems can handle enterprise-grade processors in our edge systems that are designed to go into those spaces that you see in retail, where it’s back of a manager’s office, in a closet, mounted to a wall. Non-traditional spaces where you want to have servers.”

With this synergy, AMD and Supermicro are building the foundation for next-generation AI-powered commerce. The result? Smarter operations, more personalized shopping and a framework built to scale with demand.

“Being able to address the opportunity with ready-made solutions that can be deployed right away so that retailers can, without a lot of risk, deploy these on top of existing infrastructure and begin to learn and adapt,” said Behman.

With AMD and Supermicro, the future of retail is not just smart: it’s scalable, secure and ready for whatever comes next.
