Bitdefender PHASR: Transforming MSP Security Through Proactive Prevention
Cybersecurity has become one of the biggest pressure points for today’s MSPs. But new innovations are helping MSPs rethink how they secure their environments.
CRNtv’s Jon Alba spoke with Jason Eberhardt, global vice president, MSP, at Bitdefender, to learn more about the evolving cybersecurity landscape and how Bitdefender’s latest advancements are helping MSPs strengthen security, reduce the attack surface and deliver better outcomes for their customers.
Jon Alba: From your perspective, what are the biggest challenges MSPs face today when it actually comes to managing cybersecurity for their customers?
Jason Eberhardt: When I look at the challenges MSPs are facing right now, one of the biggest is that we've relied too heavily on reactive security. For years, the focus has been on detecting and responding to threats only after they've already made their way into an environment. But we're seeing a shift back to prevention, really focusing on locking things down ahead of time.
The way I describe it is very simple: Before you worry about alarms, make sure the windows are closed, and the doors are locked.
The other challenge is that cybersecurity today needs to go beyond just stopping threats. Businesses also have to think about risk management and compliance. And that can get complicated fast, especially for small and mid-sized organizations thatdon't always have the budget or expertise to manage it on their own.
Jon: Bitdefender recently introduced GravityZone PHASR. So, what exactly is that, and how does it help drive better security outcomes for MSPs and their customers?
Jason: Cyberattacks today are incredibly opportunistic. Attackers are going after organizations of all sizes in every industry. They know that compromising a smaller business can often give them a pathway to a much bigger target down the supply chain.
What's interesting is that a lot of these attacks don't rely on traditional malware anymore. Instead, they use legitimate tools that are already inside the customer's environment, or they've taken advantage of a zero-day vulnerability. In a recent Bitdefender analysis of over 700,000 security incidents, we found that 84 percent involved these living off the land techniques. Basically, attackers blend right in with normal activity to avoid detection.
That's why we introduced PHASR: Proactive Hardening and Attack Surface Reduction. It's the first technology of its kind, and it's available within our GravityZone platform, or as a standalone solution. PHASR helps MSPs deliver truly proactive security by streaking the attack surface up to 95 percent. It uses AI and behavioral analysis to understand how users normally work, and then automatically applies hardening based on that.
If a user never needs certain tools or actions, PHASR restricts or blocks them. And what's great is that it evolves over time with user behavior, so MSPs don't have to consistently adjust policies manually.
Jon: As we look ahead into the new year, into 2026, and even beyond that, what are some of the biggest market opportunities that you and your partners plan on tackling together?
Jason: AI is going to continue changing the cybersecurity landscape for both defenders and attackers, and MSPs will need to offer security solutions that not only prevent breaches but also continuously reduce risk and help customers stay compliant. When an MSP can bring all three of these together, it becomes a real competitive advantage.
Another big opportunity is around compliance. In today's global business environments, the cost of noncompliance can be just as severe as a breach, pushing many organizations to seek more guidance. Not just products, but expertise. And that's where MSPs and partners can really stand out.
