Why Lenovo ThinkPad Is Built For The AI PC Era

The AI PC space has skyrocketed in the channel. Every provider that wants to be a player in this fast-moving market is evaluating PCs specifically designed for the age of AI. But with all the noise in the market, customers are asking a simple question: what actually matters right now?

CRNtv’s Jon Alba spoke with Alli Heeter, North America Commercial Product Manager for ThinkPad at Lenovo, to learn more about why Lenovo ThinkPad continues to lead in the commercial space, and how partners can confidently guide AI PC conversations.

Jon Alba: Alli, with all the noise around AI PCs, what’s the bottom line? What’s the most important benefit customers can realize right now?

Alli Heeter: I think that's probably the most important question and one that we hear the most from our customers and channel partners. What is the point of this AI PC transformation? It's all anybody can talk about. My answer may not be the most popular, but it is the truth: an AI PC is just a more efficient device.

I think we're at the precipice of this AI transformation as it relates to devices. Many of us are used to AI as a large language model and assume that’s going to translate somehow to the PC (which it will). But fundamentally, an AI PC is going to be a device that gives you greater battery life, better performance, and better thermal design.

Overall, what is most important is going to be the future-proofing that offers your clients. Customers are trying to get the best bang for their buck on these devices, expecting them to last as long as they can. Having a device prepared for the value and benefits AI transformation brings is what ThinkPads are built for.

Jon: There are a lot of devices entering the AI PC conversation. With so many options out there, why ThinkPad?

Alli: If you're looking at all these devices, you zoom out and you see—they're all 14-inch PCs. Maybe one is silver; one is black. One is a touchscreen; one is not. What makes one innately better than the other?

At ThinkPad, we are known for our reliability. We've been in the business of making PCs for 30 years (which is older than a lot of people I work with). And I think that is a real testament to the brand itself. We ensure that the customer is the ultimate focus for our devices.

If we think about the market right now, knowing that budgets are being stretched further than ever, devices that bring that longevity are what people want and expect. A ThinkPad is really the answer when it comes to durability and, of course, being purposefully built for innovation.

Jon: This year’s ThinkPad portfolio includes some significant updates. What are some of the biggest innovations that demonstrate ThinkPad is built for the AI PC journey?

Alli: We've got some very exciting updates that go beyond how shiny or bright the screen is. We’ve got our major alliance partners, such as AMD, Intel and Microsoft, that help us fill these PCs with what they need to function and continue to push forward on AI transformation and innovation.

But repairability is the biggest update. Repairability gives customers and partners the option to make choices with their PCs based on their needs. They can update and upgrade the battery, the keyboard, and the USB-C ports. We give users the ability to futureproof and extend the lifecycle of their AI PCs based on what their workloads require.

Jon: Finally, for channel partners navigating AI PC conversations with customers, what advice would you give them to approach these discussions with confidence?

Alli: Part of it is really listening to what customers are asking. The question upfront will probably be: “What is an AI PC?” So, having a set answer to that would be helpful.

Partners should also ask questions to clarify what their customers want to get out of their AI PCs. It’s also important to understand the product positioning that Lenovo has and how this positioning answers customer expectations.

Lenovo is known for its channel partnerships. We are a channel-first organization, so we have tons of resources available online, even publicly. Things like PSREF, our Lenovo Partner Hub, and our channel account teams. They are there to help navigate these customer conversations if a partner feels they need additional enablement or assistance with some of these more technical conversations.
