Tyler Technologies Brings Transportation Management Solution To School Bus Drivers

Public sector solution provider Tyler Technologies is rolling out a new K-12 education solution that will help schools and bus contracting companies manage bus routes, keep track of students and train substitute drivers.

The new offering, called Tyler Drive, uses both hardware and software to bring functions such as navigation, rerouting, student identification, driver time tracking and vehicle inspection management directly onto school buses. Tyler Drive was unveiled at the School Transportation News Expo in Reno, Nevada Monday.

Tyler Drive will be delivered as an application on 4G LTE-connected, semi-rugged tablets that link to Tyler Technology's K-12 transportation management software, Versatrans and Traversa. About a quarter of the nation's school bus drivers use Tyler Technologies' transportation management software, according to Ted Thien, senior vice president and general manager for Tyler Technologies' transportation group.

"The industry interest is through the roof," Thien said,

Thien said Tyler Technologies is having the tablets manufactured specifically for the solution because generally available tablets are not sturdy enough for a schoolbus environment, and military-grade options are not affordable enough for school districts. He said that the mount for the tablet was also designed specifically for school buses,

Tyler Technologies' cloud-based Traversa software, which is the most recent version of the company's transportation platform, is able to give drivers directions, help keep track of students, plan extracurricular bus services, track maintenance and help districts record driver’s hours.

The directions the drivers get from the device are specific for their routes - making sure that students don't have to cross busy streets and directing busses to streets wide enough to accommodate them.

The solution can help drivers keep track of students by displaying student information, including a photo, address, grade and school name for each student on the driver's stop, and can be used with the built-in touch screen or a scan feature to create a digital record of when and where each student boarded or exited the bus.

The solution also prompts drivers to take mandated breaks, log maintenance checks and can be used as a time-clock to help schools to keep track of driver's working schedules.

The system can be used with a built-in touch screen or a scan feature to create a digital record of when and where each student boarded or exited the bus.

Tyler Technologies says it serves more than 5,000 school districts nationwide with its software solutions for student information, analytics, transportation and integrated school financials.
