Study Reveals Why Some Businesses Aren’t Adopting VMware Cloud on AWS

A new survey by Faction projects significant growth for VMware Cloud on AWS over the next two years, but 48 percent of respondents say there’s one reason why they’ll pass.

A new study by Faction, one of the premier VMware Cloud On AWS managed service providers and a multi-cloud market leader, reveals a growing in interest in VMware Cloud on AWS. Yet, a key challenge continues to stand in its way: cost.

Forty-six percent of the 1,156 IT professionals surveyed say VMware Cloud on AWS is just too pricey. Faction says the survey indicates there’s room for improvement in evaluating the total cost of ownership for the service. But, it still won’t stand in the way of the significant” growth expected over the next 12-24 months.

Almost 30 percent of those surveyed plan to add or increase their workloads on the service over the next year. The companies largely fall into four specialties: healthcare, education, financial services and tech services. AWS’ Rima Olinger tells CRN that the biggest use case revolves around data center evacuations.

“These are customers who have a mandate to get out of their data centers. They need a quick way to do that without refactoring their applications and they want to use familiar tools and processes. They don’t want to buy new hardware and they want to capitalize on existing resources,” said Olinger, Global Alliance Lead for VMware Cloud on AWS at Amazon.

The hybrid cloud platform celebrated its two-year anniversary at VMworld 2019, where executives unveiled improvements to the migration workflow and enhancements to HCX. Over the past 12 months, VMware Cloud on AWS has tripled its customer base and seen a 150 percent spike in partner competencies.
