BMC Ups Observability Game With Planned Netreo Acquisition

‘The combined power of the BMC Helix platform and Netreo solutions provides IT Operations, DevOps practitioners, developers, and network teams with comprehensive insights spanning applications, infrastructure, and networks, helping them increase the overall reliability and performance,’ wrote Margaret Lee, BMC’s senior vice president and general manager of digital service and operations management, in a blog post.

Global business automation and service management software developer BMC Software Tuesday said it plans to acquire network and application observability technology developer Netreo.

If the acquisition closes as expected in the first half of 2024, it will give BMC Helix, the company’s automated, AI-driven service management platform the ability to offer a full-stack open observability and AIOps platform, BMC said.

No dollar value was given for Houston-based BMC’s planned acquisition of Netreo, which is headquartered in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Observability measures how well a system’s internal states can be observed based only on its external outputs as a way to better see and operate that system’s environment.

Netreo is a developer of an intelligent platform that provides smart handling of application failure detection to help businesses automatically re-test failed services to eliminate false alarms. It consolidates multiple tools to allow for secure configuration from anywhere in an enterprise. A mobile app provides a continuously synchronized view of active incidents and a live data feed of all managed devices. The platform also provides visibility into actual user-level and application-level network traffic to assist in decision making.

BMC declined to talk with CRN about the planned acquisition.

However, in response to an email enquiry, a BMC spokesperson wrote that Netreo will bring to BMC application and network management capabilities that enables a full-stack, open observability and AIOps solution with the BMC Helix suite of products to provide customers with visibility into performance across their networks, infrastructure, and applications from a modern, open observability platform.

The spokesperson also wrote that BMC has a long history of IT operations management leadership and has invested in a modern open observability platform with leading AIOps capabilities. Netreo’s Network Monitoring and Performance Diagnostics (NPMD), Application Performance Management (APM), and OpenTelemetry (OTel) capabilities, once integrated with BMC Helix, is slated to provide customers with “unmatched” IT operations management capabilities for solving problems in dynamic and complex IT environments, the spokesperson wrote.

Margaret Lee, BMC’s senior vice president and general manager of digital service and operations management, wrote in a Tuesday blog post that Netreo “helps organizations deliver digital experiences through real-time visibility into performance and availability of applications deployed in the cloud, on-premises, and within hybrid networks and infrastructure.”

Lee further wrote that acquiring Netreo will accelerate BMC’s OpenTelemetry-based observability capabilities and enhance its Helix Observability and AIOps offerings with new performance capabilities.

“The combined power of the BMC Helix platform and Netreo solutions provides IT Operations, DevOps practitioners, developers, and network teams with comprehensive insights spanning applications, infrastructure, and networks, helping them increase the overall reliability and performance,” she wrote.
