Michael Dell And Silver Lake To Directly Own Majority VMware Stake
Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell and his private equity partner Silver Lake Partners will retain a roughly 53 percent majority stake in VMware if the spinoff is approved, sources told CRN.
Michael Dell currently owns 52 percent of Dell Technologies, according to a proxy filing in May with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which means he will retain approximately a 42 percent stake in VMware. The move will give Michael Dell a direct stake in VMware versus a stake in VMware via Dell Technologies shares.
Silver Lake, which has been one of Dell’s biggest allies for years, owns nearly 14 percent of Dell Technologies, according to the proxy filed with the SEC. The private equity firm is Dell’s second biggest stakeholder after Michael Dell, according to the proxy. If the VMware share spin-off is approved, Silver Lake will hold a roughly 11 percent stake in VMware.
